Steam Summer Sale And Our Gaming Backlogs | App Trigger Roundtable

Happy Steam Summer Sale, everyone! In honor of everyone filling their Steam libraries with cheap games they’ll never play, we discuss our summer gaming backlogs.

Greetings! This is our weekly App Trigger Roundtable feature, where our writers converge to provide their opinions, wishes, statements or critical thought on one general topic centered around mobile and/or video games. Sometimes it can be funny; sometimes it can be serious. Contemporary, classic; we hope to cover a wide variety of things in this segment as a group. If you wish to submit an idea for an App Trigger Roundtable discussion topic, you can leave us an email at revyb@live.com. We’ll totally give you (and your Twitter account, if applicable) a shoutout!

This week’s App Trigger Roundtable topic: “What’s in your gaming backlog that you are playing this summer?”

Toussaint

I’m still trying to 100% The Witcher 3’s “Blood and Wine” expansion, which takes a lot of time and effort, so it’s likely I’ll be in Toussaint for the coming weeks, complimented by regular excursions in Overwatch to change the pace every now and again. As for the rest of Summer, I hope to pick up Dark Souls 3 at some point, though I’m weighing that against the fun i could have with Just Cause 3 instead. It’ll likely come down to which is the cheaper option at the time of purchase (probably Just Cause), so I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. If that doesn’t last me til August, when Deus Ex and No Man’s Sky arrive, then I’ll finally give Far Cry Primal a chance too.

No matter how hard I try, I can never manage to ever really put a dent in my gaming backlog. I borderline have an addiction to buying games, with sales like the current Steam Summer Sale only increasing my collection. So my dilemma is not having a lack of games to play, but trying to choose which game to play. Until World of Warcraft: Legion comes out this August, I have a few games I am looking to knock off the ol’ backlog. My girlfriend was really looking forward to playing Firewatch, so I am hoping to find some time to sit down and play that with her. I recently picked up Darkest Dungeon, which I am super excited to play having only heard great things. During the Steam sale I also bought Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. I have been way behind the times with the Souls series, and even though I am easily frustrated at games, I am looking forward to giving that a good run through and hopefully not throw my controller across the room doing so.

Final Fantasy VI

Despite plunking down a pretty penny or two on a GTX 1080, I won’t be using its full potential for my backlog.

Every year, during July or August, I make the time to crank out a full playthrough of Final Fantasy VI. Not only is it a defining moment of my history with the medium, but its numerous iterations present something new. Last summer, I got to appreciate the experience of what it’s like to play FFVI for the first time once more with a colleague, teaching me about how the game holds up more than a couple of decades later. This year, I will finally get to check out what the expanded content from the GBA version, while possibly dipping my toes in the positively surreal mobile version currently on Steam next year.

The possibilities are as endless as the choices between ways to get to Narshe. Choose a scenario, kupo!

Having joined the world of gaming a bit later than most of my colleagues, summertime is usually my chance to play famous, classic titles and series that I’ve missed. I’m starting with the first three Ace Attorney games; I am one trial away from the end of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and will continue with Justice For All! when I finish. Next, it’s back to the old PlayStation to play Ape Escape and Star Ocean: Til The End Of Time. Finally, if all that gets accomplished, both Earthbound and Darkest Dungeon are waiting for me, partially finished. Between all these I’ll throw in a match of Overwatch on occasion, and will be back to raiding in World of Warcraft: Legion sometime in August.

I was talked into picking up Tales of Zestiria at the Steam Summer Sale. When will I get a chance to play that? Who knows!
