Now that Starfield is finally out, players have been able to see just how gigantic the game is. With over a thousand planets to land on, over a hundred fully populated, hundreds of quests, etc, there is no shortage of things to do. Many of these things will slip through the cracks due to the sheer size of the game. However, below, we have some handy starter tips for you in order to help assist your space-faring journey.

Inventory Management

Now, inventory in Starfield does not take into account the number of items you have. Instead, it uses the mass of the items. A styrofoam coffee cup may take up 0.1 mass. So, ten of them will increase your “item” count by 1. This may sound like a benefit, but you can pick up everything in the game. Pens, paper towels, literal toilet paper, and much more. The bottom, left of every item shows the mass. It will also show up in green or red to show if it is lighter or heavier than the currently equipped item. If you find yourself maxed out, STOP!

Starfield allows you to use your ship’s cargo as an extra slot. This maxes out on your starter ship at around 450, while your personal inventory is about 125. As long as you are in or NEAR your ship, you can do it from the menu. Press “start” (3 lines), bottom left tab for your ship, then enter cargo hold. You can automatically shoot any extra items you want to the ship and lower your personal weight. This is needed a lot, especially because you cannot fast travel while over your weight. If you are overweight, you’ll also lose Oxygen simply by moving rather than sprinting – so it takes forever to get anywhere. Make sure you use the ship inventory AS MUCH as you can.
