Happy Pokemon day! The time has come at last to begin our Alola Pokemon adventures. The Alolan islands are jam-packed with brand new Pokemon we’ve never seen before, living alongside a host of very familiar ‘mons. While many of these creatures remain unchanged from their regular forms, in Alola, the unique climate and environment have transformed some Pokemon we know best from Kanto into strange and wonderful new forms.

Eighteen total Pokemon have been given new forms in the Alola region. We’ve taken a look at all of them and ranked them from incredibly lame to totally awesome. As with any new set of Pokemon, there are some changes that were obviously for the best, and others that really could have been left well enough alone.

If you’re curious about our thoughts on Pokemon Sun and Moon as a whole, you should check out our review.

Warning: There are a few Alolan forms on this list that were not revealed pre-release by official sources. If you’re trying to avoid spoilers, you may want to avoid this list until you’ve played the game!

With that out of the way, here we go with the lamest Alolan form:

18 – Diglett

Type: Ground/Steel

Pokemon Sun and Moon Description: Diglett in the Alola region live near volcanic areas, so they have few places to hide themselves away. Their tunneling activity plows the land, creating cultivated soil that’s great for agriculture. Because of this, many people in the Alola region are grateful for the presence of Diglett. The hairlike growths sprouting from Diglett’s head are metallic whiskers. It’s said they developed these stiff yet flexible whiskers in order to survive in the hostile volcanic environment.

Explanation: Here’s how I imagine the development meeting for this guy went:

“Hey, check this out, haha. I drew a Diglett…with hair. Haha.”

“Wow, that’s amazing! You’re a genius. It can be one of the Alolan forms!”

“Nah, it’s just a joke, you don’t have to-”

“What type should he be? Maybe like a Ground/Steel?”

“There’s nothing here to suggest he’s a steel-”

“And the hairs are actually metal whiskers that they use to show emotion!”

“They don’t look like metal, they’re just hair; it’s a joke-”

“And it gets a new ability entirely based on its hair!”

“I literally just drew a Diglett with hair but if you-”

And his evolution is an 80s hair band.”

“Done.”
