Is there a new Call of Duty game coming in 2023?

Call of Duty is one of the world’s most popular video game franchises, if not the most popular. As of 2022, the franchise has surpassed $30 billion in lifetime revenue.

The most recent release in the franchise was last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a sequel to the 2019 reboot of the popular Modern Warfare sub-series. In addition to positive reviews, it was a smash hit sales-wise, becoming the fastest Call of Duty game to generate $1 billion in revenue.

So what’s next for the Call of Duty franchise?

There have been numerous rumors and reports surrounding the future of Call of Duty. It was initially reported that Activision would skip releasing a full-fledged game in 2023 to instead focus on premium DLC for Modern Warfare 2.

That report, however, has since been debunked by reputable leaker Tom Henderson. He claimed earlier this year that Activision has shifted its plans and will indeed release a full standalone Call of Duty game in 2023. While we don’t know what it will be about, Henderson’s report suggests that the game will be heavily connected to the Modern Warfare series, which makes sense given how popular the series is.

It’s unclear if this year’s game will be a direct sequel to 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 or if it will just retain the same overall theme and settings. Will it feature even more remasters of beloved maps from the past?

If you recall, Activision waited until early June to officially announce the heavily rumored Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last year, and that game ultimately released in October. Activision still hasn’t announced its plans for Call of Duty in 2023, but rumor has it that the reveal could come as late as August with a full release sometime in November.

Where would you like to see the Call of Duty franchise head in 2023 or do you prefer it stay in the Modern Warfare times?
